In high school, I was a part of the National Honor Society. Through the honor society, we had various community service activities that we were required to do. The main activities that were required were packing backpacks of food to give to children who did not have food at home over the weekends and working in the concession stands at the high school football games. Most people dreaded having to sign up for a time slot and stay after school to volunteer, but I loved it. My friends and I would make sure we signed up for the same times so we could work together. I have always had a passion for community service so I usually enjoy it anyway, but having my friends with me made it so much better. It did not matter if we were standing on our feet for hours in a hot concession room, making hot dogs and serving pizza, we were still having fun just because we were together. We would forget about how much we dreaded working during the football game when we were laughing and making jokes and singing songs with each other. The other volunteer activity we did, packing backpacks, would also not have been as enjoyable without my friends there. Most of the time we set up the packing as an assembly line and would be doing the same activity and motion for several hours; it got very mundane and tiresome. But still, being in a big room with my friends made it so much better. I would forget how much my fingers were hurting and how tired I was because having my friends there distracted me from it.

My friends make me feel alive. I need to be around my friends. I have noticed in life that as long as I have people around me that have positive attitudes and that I enjoy being around, then I feel alive. I know that I can be myself and not worry about what is going on when I am in a positive attitude. No matter the service situation or life situation, as long as I have a group of people that I am comfortable with, then I will be happy.
